Avant même la sortie de son premier album, Prince participait à des sessions d’enregistrements pour d’autres artistes et jouait sur des compositions qui n’étaient pas les siennes. Il continuera cette démarche jusqu’au bout de sa carrière. Entre 1979 et 2015, Prince joue au moins d’un instrument (voire tous parfois) sur plus de 80 chansons écrites par d’autres personnes et sorties sur des albums ou single autres que les siens.
94 east
Pépé Willie a été un des premiers à donner sa chance à Prince en tant que musicien de studio alors qu’il était encore adolescent. Il monte un groupe (94 East) et multiple les enregistrements avec Prince (à la guitare et aux synthés), André Cymone et d’autres jeunes talents de Minneapolis entre 1975 et 1978, pour fournir notamment des titres au groupe The Imperials ou le chanteur Colonel Abrams. Pepé Willie sortira une première compilation de ces sessions en 1986 (Minneapolis Genius), lorsque Prince est au sommet de sa popularité. De multiples rééditions et variations suivront sous différents titres avec des morceaux supplémentaires, sous leurs formes originales ou mises au gout du jour (94 East featuring Prince, One Man Jam, Cookhouse Five, The Legend Continues….). La plus complète étant le double CD Symbolic Beginning (18 pistes) qui sort en 1995. Pepé Willie est l’auteur de l’ensemble des chansons. Prince n’a co-écrit qu’un seul titre avec lui à cette époque : Just Another Sucker. Une de ces chansons (One Man Jam) sera exploitée par le groupe The Imperials en single sous le titre Fast Freddie the Roller Disco King en 1979.
